Biography
The exclusive Swedish department store NK, (AB Nordiska Kompaniet), was founded in 1902 when the two largest retail companies, in Stockholm, K.M. Lundberg and Joseph Leja were merged. The companies' were essentially different, but both focused on an exclusive customer base.
The large NK department store at Hamngatan in Stockholm, was designed by the Swedish Architect Ferdinand Boberg in 1915, after American inspiration. During various expansive stages, NK also had branches abroad, for example in St. Petersburg (1908-17), Moscow (1913-17) and in Buenos Aires (1920-34). Other NK department stores were opened in Farsta (1960), Malmö (1963), Täby (1974), and in 1967 the large department store AB Ferdinand Lundquist & Co in Göteborg, was acquired. In 1991, the company was converted into a real estate company with independent specialty stores as tenants under the NK name.
