Description
When he started working at Gustavsberg in 1895, Gunnar Wennerberg’s task was to produce a collection of “modern” service porcelain for the 1897 Stockholm Exhibition. Other designs from the same period are “Äppelblom”, “Gullviva”, “Blåklocka”, “Viol”, “Lindblom”, etc. The services that were decorated were the factory’s older stock so, in other words, they were very traditional. Wennerberg used Swedish flora, particularly wild flowers, that were carefully styled as borders with a captivating freshness. Here, Lily of the Valley’s graceful stems move rhythmically around the edge. They move from a naturalistic freshness to strict stylisation. The white flowers are painted in thick enamel paint.
