Description
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish architect, designer and artist based in Glasgow. He was significant in the development of the British Modern Style around 1900. In his creation, he was influenced by symbolism, the Arts and Crafts movement and Japanese style. The Mackintosh chair was designed in 1897 for the Argyle Street Tea Rooms in Glasgow. The high back of the chair was aimed at providing intimacy and privacy. When the chairs were placed around a table, the backs formed a natural barrier to other guests in the tea room. Mackintosh's chairs created the feeling of a room within the room.
