Description
Alvar Aalto’s world famous vase is a great example of when traditional craft meets modern design. Manufactured by means blowing hot glass into wooden moulds, the organic shape becomes further emphasized by the variations which occur due to the mould’s inevitable deterioration.
The vase was conceived as part of a series called ”Eskimoerindens Skinnbuxa”, The Eskimo Woman’s Leather Trousers, which was Aalto’s submission to a 1936 design competition held by Karhula-Iittala glassworks. The vase was later presented at the Paris world fare of 1937 as part of the Finish Pavilion. The name “Savoy” was only acquired after the luxury restaurant opened in Helsinki that same year. The restaurant’s décor featured several designs by both Alvar Aalto and his wife, Aino Aalto.
