Description
Lid for terrine, manufactured at the Marieberg porcelain factory. Possibly after a design by Olof Årre.
During the Rococo period, various types of shell ornaments were a recurring motif. The edge of this lid has a decorative detail reminiscent of a scallop. The Marieberg kiln book from 1763-65 describes the factory's production, and in some cases the name of a particular artist is mentioned when describing a model. One such example reads: ‘’Terriner, owala, Mussel orres mod med låck à 54 dlr‘’. This description refers to a terrine designed by Olof Årre, where the body was covered with decorative shells and scallops. The model is said to have come in two versions; one where the knob was shaped like a crayfish, a copy of which is preserved in the National Museum's collections, and a second more plain version. While the other version seems not to have survived in its entirety, this lid, with the same characteristic edge, could possibly be an example of Årre's second model.
