Description
Monica Bäckström (1939-2020) was a pioneer in Swedish glass art. Directly after finishing her education at Konstfack 1959–1964, with a degree in metal and industrial design, Bäckström was recruited by the Boda glassworks, where she would remain for the next 40 years.
Backström's bowl is made of silver-foiled glass, also known as 'poor man's silver' and was originally intended as a holder for block candles. It was part of her 1967 exhibition 'Glasyra' at Aveny Kristallen in Stockholm. The opening of which could be described as a kind of happening, where Bäckström, dressed in an angelic costume, presented her foiled glass objects within a maze-like hall of mirrors, all to the accompaniment of the band Science Poption's specially commissioned song 'Monica'.
