Description
Wilhelm Kåge was a Swedish artist, painter and ceramicist. He is best known for his many tableware sets for the Gustavsberg porcelain factory, where he was the artistic director from 1917 to 1949. Wilhelm Kåge is considered to be Sweden’s foremost 20th-century ceramicist. This is a cup and saucer from a coffee set designed by Wilhelm Kåge for Gustavsberg in 1937. The Museum has several parts from the set, including a coffee pot, sugar bowl and cream jug.
Wilhelm Kåge first studied at Tekniska skolan (now Konstfack) in Stockholm but left before graduating. Instead, he enrolled at the Valand Academy in Gothenburg. Wilhelm Kåge also studied graphic art in Munich. He was a poster designer before becoming a ceramicist, and is known for his colourful posters for theatres, lotteries and exhibitions. He is regarded as the first Swede to successfully use posters for communication.
