Description
Tapestry with unbleached linen warp and elements of varyiously coloured wool. Landscape with trees in blue-grey, yellow-green and red-pink. The motif of this verdure is taken from ancient imagery, but is clearly influenced by National Romanticism. Woven in the lower left corner: 1908. A blue-grey 4-5 cm-wide border frames the primary motif. Warp fringe, around 3 cm long, on the short sides. Lines with unbleached linen fabric. 6 brass rings for mounting. Inspired by an 18th century tapestry from a rectory in Småland. Compare with RKM 99-1913, RKM 100-1913 and NM 21.277 c, probably woven by vicar Ulrika Norlin, born in Oxelgren, Skirö, Östra hundred. The Handarbetets Vänner (HV – handicrafts’ friends) type may be linked to Alma Wenkert, who worked for HV and later had a weaving mill in Lund. Also compare it with the tapestry from Konstindustriskolan. Handarbetets Vänner was founded in 1874 by Sophie Adelsparre to “refine Swedish textile crafts in the national spirit and with an artistic focus”. Hadarbetets Vänner established a pattern studio, handed out textile commissions to weavers around Sweden and, in 1924, started training weaving instructors. At the start of the 20th century large tapestries were woven as wall decoration, including ones based on mural paintings by Carl Larsson and Gunnar G:son Wennerberg. A number of Sweden’s foremost textile artists have been linked with Handarbetets Vänner.
