Description
Wilhelm Kåge belongs to the most well-known Swedish ceramic artists of the 20th century. Like many of his contemporaries, Kåge was a great admirer of Chinese pottery from the Tang and Song (Sung) dynasties. When the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm in 1949 put on the exhibition "Northern Song wares from Swedish collections", Kåge designed the exhibition poster and catalogue cover. He chose to give the exhibition an alternative name, which is more vivid and says a lot about how Chinese ceramics was perceived at the time, namely "Sung – a ceramic golden age." Prior to his engagement in 1917 as a designer for the Gustavsberg ceramics factory, Kåge had established himself as one of Sweden’s foremost poster designers. The Röhsska Museum owns a fairly large collection of Kåge’s posters from the 1910s. This 1949 poster, which was acquired in 2013, makes an important addition to the poster collection; it represents a later phase of his artistic career, and is an interesting document on how Chinese art has been received and presented in Sweden.
