The Falk Simon Collection
This gallery presents a unique donation. In 1934, Director Falk Simon donated a collection of early gold and silver objects to the Röhsska Museum. The collection comprises 82 objects and spans a period from the 13th century to the early 19th century. It includes works from the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe, as well as a Chinese silver bowl from the Tang dynasty and jewellery from Roman antiquity.
The collection focuses primarily on the European Renaissance and Baroque periods, when silver objects increasingly featured secular motifs inspired by the rediscovery of classical antiquity. Several of the objects relate to the art cabinets of the period — collections in which rare, exotic, and technically accomplished objects were displayed side by side. Taken together, the collection offers a coherent overview of European design history up to around 1800.
